Arizona's Immigration Enforcement Bill - It's About Time

I am generally regarded as a very tolerant individual. Nevertheless, when it comes to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s stance on immigration enforcement I am fully behind her. The fact of the matter is that the federal government has ignored the issue of illegal immigration for decades. Regarding this problem, the feds speak with forked tongue. On one hand, they tell us that we are living under the constant threat of terrorism. Yet, on the other hand, they have done little to nothing to curb the tide of illegal immigrants.
Mark, I totally agree.I am an American citizen, but I have family overseas who would like to come visit us. My uncle, who is also my God father and who raised me can't get visa to the U.S. because the US government is afraid he is going to stay here (he is not married and lives in the Eastern Europe). He's been trying to get visa for 3 years in a row and they keep denying him. I hate the bias. Someone was joking that he should come to Mexico and try to cross the border illegally. Mark, I also agree! I work in a travel clinic. We give travel immunizations and information about the country. Many, many countries warn that you must carry and show your passport if requested while traveling. This is nothing new. It is about time we buckle down and do something about the problem we have here. Thanks for a good article.Hi Anonymous,

Mark, I agree with you.This is a real crisis - the people, who enter a sovereign country illegally. You have passport, you have VISA, and different other rules. But it is hard to keep a strong vigil in the border zone.The problem takes a devastating form in border areas. In India, we are facing the same problem. And no Govt. rules have been able to control these stream of immigrants forget about giving it a complete halt.I do not know, if new laws help to sort out such issues, it could be a landmark discovery to curb problems with illegal immigrants.Thanks.SiddharthaHi Siddhartha,
Thank you for your comments. It is good to see that people from other countries can identify with the problem we are facing in the U.S. I am inclined to think that with modern technology surveillance should be quite possible. I forsee a solution in the near future.

Mark,I am a USA citizen for more than 1/2 of my life. But I am from Peru, as I read your article, I do remember this problem it been here for ever and not only the government is at fault. These Agricultural Corp. are the ones which support their senator, and these senator don't pay any attention to the immigrations problems which have been escalating to the point that they have lose control of the situation.One of my concern is that, I hope this new law are easier with those people that are innocent to this situation. And have been paying taxes like everyone else and they do have a change to stay in this wonderful country legally.Thank you
What a shame that you would side with the bigots, Pastor Mark. This law means that every man, woman and child must carry proof of citizenship with them everywhere they go. Do you think little old ladies are going to carry around their birth certificates or passports? If they don't, they are subject to a fine and imprisonment. Their only defense: They don't "look" like an illegal immigrant. What does an illegal immigrant look like after all?Want to take a family of poor people to church with you on Sunday? You could be charged with a crime if any are found to be in the country illegally. Tsk, tsk. I'm sorry that you feel compelled to slander my position as a pastor and accuse me of being a bigot. This is not about discrimination against any individual because of their ethnicity, nationality, age or income. If someone were to attend my church because they are illegal immigrants and they are arrested for not being in compliance with the law... that is their problem. Just the same if I were to break the law. Illegal is illegal.
So what are our options? To let anyone anywhere just come into our country? Sure... they can take American dollars, which they don't have to pay taxes on, and bring it with them back to their country of origin... they can get on welfare and foodstamps, for which they don't have to pay taxes, they can overload our emergency rooms and schoolrooms all at taxpayers expense.
I'm sorry if my viewpoint offends your perception of what you think Christianity is all about. But, if people want to benefit from the laws of our land then they need to be citizens of our land.

Bravo for writing this article, Mark! It is about time that we put a stop to this scurge. We love Hispanic people, that's not the point! Citizenship is not a right to anyone who steals across our border to take advantage of our system. Citizenship is a privilege, fought and paid for by American citizens' sweat, blood and tears! It is not discrimination to stop someone and ask to see ID. If this is profiling, then why is it that a majority of illegals are Hispanic?

You are absolutely right. The Arizona law is a reiteration of federal laws that are not being enforced. There are now over 450,000 illegal immigrants in Arizona alone. Imagine the drain on the state budget during these hard times. Thank you for your comments.
