It seems woefully too easy for many Americans to turn a blind eye to the violence and destruction occurring in Iran since the recent election fiasco ignited the people's protest. Sometimes we need a reminder. Enter Neda Setan, the young Iranian woman in the above video who was brutally mowed down by police gunfire. It is a vivid reminder of the type of atrocities that are occurring in this totalitarian country that has endured hardship and oppression for far too long.
One might ask, why was the young lady shot to death? However, the answer is quite simple. She was practicing what many Americans take for granted... freedom to speak her opinion. Oops, that's right, in Iran many citizens don't have that right. Neither do they have the right of freedom of assembly. Indeed, many women are still treated as second class citizens, stoned to death for accusations of indiscretions. I suppose that only makes it easier to shoot a woman down when you don't agree with what she has to say.
Ironically, perhaps, the Needa video will not serve just as a rallying cry for continued protests, but likely become the lotus from which springs forth such civil insurrection that Iran shall shortly be engaged in a full fledged civil war. Needa has become a martyr. How many others shall follow in her footstep before the Ayatollah Khomeini and Ahmandinejad wake up and smell the coffee?
I hope as Americans who claim to cherish freedom and liberty that we can remember to keep the struggling Iranian people in our prayers. I also hope that we learn from their sacrifices.

Top-level comments on this article: (9 total)Very powerful and extremely sad Mark! Thank you for the reminder.Love you,MichelleHi Michelle,If more people could just come to understand what is going on over in Iran and how easily it would be for the United States to repeat the mistakes that they have made. I am sad for Neda's family. Let's keep them in our prayers.Mark
Hi Mark, a sad truth and you are good to remind us of the freedoms we take for granted, and this is why I support our troops. War is ugly, but sometimes necessary. I agree in prayer for freedom for these people. Both physically and spiritually. TeresaThank you, TeresaI'm afraid we have only seen the tip of the iceberg on this one. May everyone, everywhere continue to lift up the people of Iran in prayer.Blessings,Mark
By some accounts Neda wasn't participating at all, just an unfortunate bystander. Irrelevant, as she is now symbolic of tyranny.May 4, 1970...Kent State, Ohio. The Ohio National Guard mow down four U.S. college students protesting the Vietnam War. Freedom coming to a campus near you.Anonymous RexRex,How odd that you should mention Kent State, I thought the same thing when I was thinking about what is happening in Iran. Thank you for your comments.Mark
...and I hope this time the U.S. will not intervene. We are have a miserable track record when it comes to fiddling in the internal affairs of other nations.Anonymous,For a caveat... may the US "Government" not interfere. It seems that when the people of the United States provide aid and assistance through non-profit organizations that we do much better.Mark"Anonymous,For a caveat... may the US "Government" not interfere. Good article. WOW, I am in such turmoil after watching only a few videos from Iran! I am amazed beyond words at the hideous brutality that people are living under there. Watch the hangings of homosexuals or the stoning of young girls who find a love outside their religion. The Islamic revolution is the abuse of religion. It is the utter and complete disgrace of God’s purpose. It is a turning away from the love of God that should instead be the output of all religion.I am all the more in admiration and in gratitude to our brave troops who are dying to keep this evil away from our country. God bless our military!
Well said, Missing LinkWe can only pray that things will get better. Sadly, I am afraid that they are only going to get worse.God bless you,Mark
hi.I'm a Iranian man.it's a very tragic disaster.we all are really sorry.but the Neda's story is some thing else.Iran Informational office has been investigated on the subject. The result is that Neda was not murdered by police. She was murdered by her own Group. Not police. In this video you see It is a scened video made by illegal groups who are against Iran.
hi to all.
i agree with akbar.
neda was not a human woman and then she killed by her own group.
in allah we trust.
I think I could go to Iran and change their world. The women a beautiful their and the men violently insecure.
My biggest criticism of this article is that it reminds me of how impotent we all are in the lives of millions of people around the planet. And today May 21, 2001, at 6:00 pm Saturday, we all will fixate on the end of the world. The USA has a surveyed population claiming 82% Christianity. Failed legacy of Christianity.
