Are we alone in the universe? Is there intelligent life on other planets?
The day before Halloween, on October 30, 1938, millions of Americans tuned in to a popular radio program that regularly featured plays directed by Orsen Welles. The play for that evening was based on the science fiction novel The War of the Worlds, about the earth being invaded by Martians. However, in adapting the book for the radio performance Orsen Welles made a significant change; the play was written and performed to sound like a live news broadcast!
As the radio audience continued listening to this simulated news broadcast countless individuals believed that they were listening to an actual news report of an invasion from Mars. People everywhere packed into their cars and hit the roads; they hid in cellars, loaded guns and even wrapped their heads to protect themselves from poison Martian gas, in attempts to protect themselves from the invading Martians. None of them realized they had been listening to a radio play.
If the Orsen Welles radio play proved one thing, it proved that many Americans are expecting some kind of contact with extraterrestrial life forms. To add to this expectation in 1947 a UFO reportedly crashed in Roswell, New Mexico with alien life forms on board. since then, tens of thousands of UFO sightings have been reported.
Theories are now being proposed by eminent scientists and philosophers suggesting that the gods of ancient mythology, such as Zeus, Apollo, and Hercules, were really "Gods from Outer Space". These so called alien visitors have been credited with such things as building the Pyramids, Stonehenge, and even planting human life on earth.
Countless science fiction movies have been produced featuring contact with aliens from other worlds. You may remember some of them: The Day the Earth Stood Still, Lost in Space, Star Trek, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Mork from Ork, X Files, Contact and the unforgettable ET.
The expectation of making contact with alien life forms is currently so high that hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent every year in America and abroad in a great technological Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Huge radio telescopes all around the world scan the skies 24 hours a day listening for some sound, some clue, some message from outer space telling us that we are not alone.
You may remember ET, the little alien character created by Steven Spielberg. In the movie ET the alien picks up a telephone and succeeds in muttering some English words as he says... "ET phone home! ET phone home!" The little fellow had somehow been left behind on earth and was trying to get a message out to his family so he could go back home.
In a sense, the SETI project is similar to what ET was doing, except in this Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence it's the earthmen that are picking up the phone and saying... ET phone Earth! And they wait, and they listen for the phone to ring, they are waiting to receive that signal, that message that says, "You are not alone!"
Well, I've got some good news for you today. According to the latest research the signal from ET has come in! Contact HAS been made. The message has been received. The Rosetta Stone interpreting its meaning has been found. And some of the most reputable scientists in the history of the world who have had an opportunity to look at the content of this message have been able to translate its meaning. The message begins with these words... "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth..."
Yes... the Bible is that message that so many people have been waiting for. And although it is a message transmitted from beyond this terrestrial world by an intelligent being, many refuse to believe it, and spend the majority of their lives looking for it in all the wrong places. Some people simply cannot see the forest for the trees. They don't want to accept the message and consider it to be nothing more than static noise.
Yes... the phone has been ringing, but some people refuse to pick it up. Some people do not believe in the trustworthiness of the message of the Bible. So, how do we know that this message in the Bible is authentic?
Most people's knowledge about the Bible is derived from second, third, and fourth hand sources. It should not be surprising then that most people think that the Bible says, "God helps those who help themselves" or "Cleanliness is next to godliness" when in fact the Bible says neither. There are many such "quotes" that are inappropriately attributed to the Bible, but people believe that they are in there.
Many other people are also convinced the the Bible cannot be true because it teaches that the earth is flat or that it is the center of the universe, when in fact the Bible does not teach either of these ideas. In fact, there are amazing scientific facts that have been asserted throughout the Bible that science has only recently been able to verify.
Some people doubt the trustworthiness of the Bible message by claiming that it was written several hundred years after the time of Christ, when in truth we have manuscripts that bring us within decades of his life. Some of these same individuals will not question the writings of Plato, Aristotle and Caesar when the earliest manuscripts for these texts are between 1,000 and 1,400 years removed from their origin. It's a double standard... because people don't want to believe the message in the Bible.
When the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947 they produced original manuscripts dating back to 200 B.C. And although these manuscripts are over 2,000 years old they are 99.5% accurate from the Scriptures we have today, and most of these are variations in spelling and style. In Isaiah 40;8 we are told, "The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the LORD endures forever."
Although the message of the Bible was received by dozens of generations over a period of 1,800 years, the message is harmonious and continuous from beginning to end in presenting the person and work of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and the story of redemption runs from Genesis through Revelation.
The message in the Bible was written by over 40 authors whom included among others, a king, a herdsman, a fisherman, and a tax collector. The authors were educated and uneducated, rich and poor.
In the Book of Hebrews we are told, "Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets." Yes, God's message to earth has been revealed.
In 2 Peter 1:19-21 the Apostle assures us that Scripture is not man written but God inspired. "And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit."
2 Timothy 3:16-17 also informs us that the inspired Scriptures were "God-breathed" to help equip believers... "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
If we want to know more about the Great Extraterrestrial Intelligence that has sent the message to us, then we need to read His message, we need to study His message, we need to meditate upon His message and talk about His message. In it we will discover that we are NOT alone in this universe. In it we will learn about the mysteries of the universe and the Messenger. In it we will learn that the Messenger loves us. In fact, He loved the world so much that He sent His only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
