A-hoy land lubbers!

Enter here in

If ye should dare

And if ye whimper

I don't care

I'll still cut out yer liver

And clip off yer hair

If you don't swab the deck

And hoist sail over there

Now, I'll give ye no pressure

If ye find me lost treasure

But yer tongue I'll cut out

With a hoot and a shout

If ye tell but a soul

'bout me treasure map scroll

Arrr... the jargon of pirates! What child among us, or adult for that matter, has not at one time or another squinted an eye and cried out, "Yo, ho, ho, and a bottle of rum!"

It's international Talk Like a Pirate Day. Who would have thought of such a thing? But, evidently somebody did. For on this day people across the seven seas are dressing up like those sea faring hoodlums from days gone by with eye patches, ear rings, scarfs, swords and knives.

If you think about it, doesn't it seem rather odd that people should want to dress up like a bunch of terrorists that roamed the oceans? These were the equivalent of Al Quida in their days. Looting, burning, raping and pillaging. And we want to emulate these characters? What gives?

Could it just be that there is a little pirate in each of us? A wandering wayward soul in search of fortune at any cost? Perhaps many of us have this deep rooted desire to possess nerves of steel and tongues that are razor sharp so we can intimidate or bluff those that are wiser or more powerful than us. Isn't that it? Is it not really a form of the Robin Hood syndrome? You know, rob from the rich and give to the poor?

Who knows? But on this International Talk Like a Pirate Day if any of you little ship rats happen to find some booty you better share the wealth or you just might find yourself walking the plank!

Yo, ho, ho...

Unreal Mark! Sounds to me like money, property and prestige motivated the pirates.

I think that the appeal for us to be pirates, is that we can take what we want. Be it booty or be it body.
I do not believe much thought is given to the wrong of it, or of the pain it might bring to others. I do not think much thought is given to even how much joy the act might give us.
